The Jeep Wrangler claimed top honours for best resale value in Canada by percentage, as announced Wednesday by Canadian Black Book (CBB), the country’s largest publisher of wholesale used-vehicle prices.
Holding close to 70 per cent of MSRP after four years, the Wrangler placed first in CBB’s 10th annual Best Retained Value Awards and also won the compact SUV category for the fifth straight year. CBB compared values of 2011 models in 20 classes.
Resale value matters because “depreciation is still the biggest cost of ownership,” Bailey says. “We all watch gas prices, but … people should stop and look at the future value. It may be a great deal month to month, but in the ownership period it may be more expensive.”
He adds, “Some people buy a car and drive it until there is nothing left, but most people want to eventually sell their car, so it is important to consider,” Bailey says.
“Sometimes spending a little more today will net you more on the back end,” Bailey says.

Spring is creeping across the country, while snow and ice are losing their grip on America. Fortunately, there were still plenty of winter’s fingerprints in Canada not too long ago when Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep brought automotive test drivers north to size up the automakers’ All-Wheel Drive and winter driving systems.
At a winter test track outside bitterly cold Montreal, the automaker family offered up nearly their entire vehicle line for evaluation for a collection of auto journalists sent to see how well the machines stood up to black ice, low grip and other winter driving scenarios both off-road and at speed. Front and center was the performance capabilities of the companies’ All-Wheel Driving systems.
The difference between AWD and four-wheel drive relies mainly on the amount of technology built into each system. Four-wheel drive improves on front wheel drive by taking the power to all four wheels, improving grip and providing a more stable ride over snow, ice, off-road terrain, etc.
All-Wheel Drive is a more modern and advanced system that uses some amount of artificial intelligence to control the amount drive going to the wheels individually. The most advanced AWL systems available use a computer in difficult driving conditions to sense which wheel has the best grip. Once the system reads which wheel(s) have the most stable contact patch, AWL sends torque that way — balancing the power between gripping and slipping wheels to keep the car moving forward. AWL keeps the process going, calculating in microseconds and continually adjusting power distribution
While any number of the Jeeps and Dodge trucks standing by were more than able to deal with winter driving conditions both on track and off-road, I opted to test the best AWD performance vehicles on the scene. The 2015 Dodge Charger Rallye trim level packs less raging power than the new Charger Hellcat, it still offers a roaring HEMI V8 and that same essential winter driving tool – AWD.
The Montreal test track allowed ample space to open the throttle a bit on the well-packed snow and ice, in between wide circle turns and straight line stops and starts. As I hit the gas on the straights and in the wider, rimshot turns, I could feel the AI within the big, loud Charger’s AWD system balancing and rebalancing the V8 power. I could let the end out when I wanted for a bit of drifting, but — with deft use of the throttle and a light touch on the steering wheel — the Charger Rallye never spun or lost its way on its test runs.
My favorite vehicle of the day — and the finest performer even on an icy track — was the latest edition of the Chrysler 300. I admit I’ve always liked the 300 and consider it the finest performing vehicle in the line (with the exception of aspiring, though affordable supercar, the aforementioned Hellcat). For whatever reason, this particular car speaks to me. It feels good under me. My driving skills relate well to it. It feels comfortable, speedy and well-balanced. I would own one.
But, the question on that blustery, snowy day was how well the sophisticated luxury sports sedan would stand up to 50 mph speeds on inches of snow crammed atop packed ice.
With the Chrysler AWD systems on full as part of the car’s all-weather driving package, the 300 was just as deft, entertaining and exiting to drive — flirting with 50 mph down the straightaways in full-on slick conditions.
This Chrysler / Dodge / Jeep event (and other like it) prove clearly that the AWD technology is so far along that residents of any winter states in the U.S. or Canada would be foolish to opt for makes and models that don’t offer it’s winter defying smarts.
At an announcement this morning at its Canadian Headquarters in downtown Windsor, Chrysler Canada gave the residents of Windsor-Essex County over one million reasons to smile as local Company employees and retirees have donated $1,062,355.72 to the United Way/Centraide Windsor-Essex County 2015 campaign. This donation marks the single largest pledge towards the United Way/Centraide Windsor-Essex County and the 27th straight year that Chrysler Canada employees have donated more than $1 million.
Keeping with the holiday theme that it is better to give than to receive; this year’s campaign pledge total was presented as a gift-wrapped cheque that was unwrapped by employees in front of a Canadian-made 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT 392.
“Giving generously to the United Way has been a long-standing tradition of our Chrysler Canada plant and office employees,” said Mike Brieda, Plant Manager, Windsor Assembly Plant, Chrysler Canada. “With this year’s employee donation exceeding one million dollars, the United Way is one step closer to securing their annual campaign objectives and maximizing their outreach programs to better the lives of those in the community who are in need.”
“Chrysler Canada, Unifor Locals 444, 195, 1498 and ONA Local 8 always pull together to support their community through United Way,” said Lorraine Goddard, CEO, United Way. “Over the years, they have contributed millions of dollars to the United Way campaign. They’re an important part of our community, and we’re so fortunate and grateful for their financial contributions, sponsorship and volunteer support.”
“Unifor Local 444 and its members have always supported the United Way knowing that the outreach programs and support that comes from them is second to none throughout Windsor and Essex County,” said Dino Chiodo, President, Unifor Local 444. “I’m very pleased of the effort and contributions from our members who gave, as they know they are ‘Community Partners Making A Community Difference.’”
Chrysler Canada employees have set a proud example of giving back to their community with donations of over $1 million for over a quarter of a century. The participation rate for the 2015 campaign was 51 per cent, with an average employee pledge of $324. There were 643 employees this year that gave at the “Friends Level,” which means employees contributed $500 or more. There were 147 donations at the “Leadership Level,” for those individuals who contributed $1,000 or more.
As of Dec. 5, the United Way/Centraide Windsor-Essex County campaign overall total now stands at $3,377,655. Local residents can also help join the cause and help give back to assist those most vulnerable in our community. The public is encouraged to take part and donate generously for this year’s United Way/Centraide Windsor-Essex County 2015 campaign.
